Another Little Bangalore Boat Church

53 weeks ago, I posted about my first boat church. The other day — deep in Bangalore’s Austin Town — I found another.

So what does this represent? St Thomas coming to Kerala? Or Jesus and Mary coming to India? Is the boat a little Fisher of Men? Or the stormy trip to Gerasenes?

How many of these boat churches are there? And when will I find one that’s not empty?

Haha .. I think it might be something to do with the idea of Mary being a guiding star for seafarers.. In Velankani, TN, devotion to her is very popular. I think there is some story of how she guided a ship out of a storm or something..
    Hence the boat theme?

Ah! Fantastic!!! I’m sure this is the reason, but it begs another question: why would there be sailor-themed temples in the exact center of the country? Although perhaps if you’re gonna pay homage to Mary, you have to do it right! Thanks!!!

Hmm perhaps it’s some general Catholic thing? Maybe the tamils who worship at this chapel are related to some of these fishermen?|Velakanni is a very popular pilgrimage place for Catholics..
Going slightly off topic.. Have you read this book called ‘Following Fish’ by Samanth Subramanian? thought it was pretty cool.. and there was one chapter about fishermen and (a) church(es), if I remember right

I haven’t read the book — but it looks good… Love any travelogue combined with good recipes! Oh, to write one myself. Instead, I’m stuck on Tamils now, and watching Thuppakki to wash the (amazing, but guilt-filled) taste of Chennai Express from my mouth…. ;P
